How using and playing on with the Wii and Wii Accessories can aide recovery from a Stroke
Findings presented at the recent American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2010 has shown that playing the Wii and using Wii Accessories can be beneficial in helping Stroke survivors recover. Patients that have lost strength and motor skills after having a Stroke can use the Wii to help recover and improve these losses, not just through the normal physiotherapy, but also in a fun way on the Wii.
Recent research shows a new way for Stroke recovery:
In a ground breaking study, 11 stroke victims with weakness in their arms could reach out and grab object with more ease after they had played active video games on a Wii for two weeks as opposed to 11 stroke patients who played card or block games who showed no change in arm strength afterwards.
Gustavo Saposnik, MD, director of the Stroke Outcomes Research Unit at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto told WebMD.com “for the first time, we’ve shown that the virtual reality gaming system is safe, feasible, and potentially effective at improving motor function after stroke but until the video games prove safe in larger numbers of stroke survivors, it’s too soon to recommend people start playing Wii games after stroke”.
However despite this, further research is now being tested and if the result show the same, then we may see playing active games on the Wii using Wii Accessories as there normal controllers as an innovative and fun way for stroke victims to recover.
